Artist Statement

The seventeen works in this exhibition were selected from a large number of small watercolours on paper I have completed in the last year. The subject matter is drawn from old postcards and polaroids, movies tills and personal photographs.The paintings are built up slowly in many thin abstract washes to reveal an almost monochromatic image.

As with memory, these painting inhabit an awkward ground between revealing and concealing their subject matter. In Postcard, a mountain threatens to disintegrate into a incoherent swath of brush strokes, removed from any concrete relationship to the original source. In The Portrait, a shirt dissolves into drippy blotches of paint. These works hint at the limits of the medium to sum up a whole event. For example, in the Beekeepers the viewer is only offered a glimpse of what is going on and it is left up to them to fill in possible scenarios. Seen together, these paintings form an archive of fragments of something between a real and imagined past.
