Biography / Artist Statement

Toby Gillies is a third generation artist from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His interdisciplinary practice can be characterized by a playful exploration of materials, technique and representation - 'doing' is important. His recent work aims to explore the peculiar sense of isolation that results from existing within human constructed surroundings. Images insinuate myths of opposing ideas; the separation of domestic and natural space, feature and featureless, place and no-place, and the constructed separation between the human mind and nature. He draws inspiration from images of humans as animals, food, popular house plants, microwave cook-books and some furniture.

Aside from his personal practice, Toby has been involved in community art for many years, and currently is employed by Art City and is the Community Artist in residence at the Misericordia hospital.
