Galen Johnson is a Winnipeg artist and an Environmental Design graduate from the University of Manitoba. His illustrations have appeared in numerous publications, including the Walrus and Canadian Dimension magazine, where he is currently the art director. This is his first solo exhibition.
AEROGRAD borrows its title from a 1935 Alexander Dovzhenko film about a utopian city of paratroopers on the eastern coast of the former Soviet Union. While it was never my intention to reference the film specifically, the ideas and images evoked by the name (which translates into English as "air city") spoke to the energy of the drawings and the vast white spaces that surround them.
